We make four AirTag holders, and the question we get asked most is which one to buy. The honest answer is that it has almost nothing to do with the holder and everything to do with what you are fixing it to. Work out the surface first and the choice makes itself.
The one-minute answer
- Steel or iron, and you may want to move it — the ORIGINAL. Toughest body, fastest to deploy.
- Steel or iron, but you want it to disappear — the SLIM. Same magnet, much lower profile, and a 3M VHB pad as well.
- Aluminium, plastic, glass, fibreglass or a bike frame, and it is staying put — the BASIC. Pad and zip ties, no magnet, cheapest of the four.
- You do not know yet, or it will move between a van, a bike and a toolbox — the SUPREME. All three fixings in one body.
Short on time? Tap the one that matches your surface:
All four take an Apple AirTag (1st or 2nd generation) or a Motorola Moto Tag. The tracker is never included — you drop your own in.
Start with the surface, not the holder
There are only three ways to attach anything to anything, and each one fails in a predictable way. Knowing how they fail is most of the decision.
Magnet
A high-grade neodymium magnet grabs ferrous metal: chassis rails, subframes, engine bays, tow hitches, steel toolboxes, gates, plant machinery, shipping containers. The test is the one you already know — if a fridge magnet sticks to it, ours will.
What it will not do is grip aluminium bodywork, plastic bumpers, fibreglass or glass. Not weakly: not at all. Plenty of modern bonnets and van panels are aluminium, so check before you order rather than after.
Its real advantage is speed. Nothing to clean, no curing time, and it lifts off in a second — so one holder can follow whichever vehicle or machine is going somewhere you would rather it didn't.

Hidden behind the fuel flap: the magnet holds on the steel flap, and the holder is out of sight once the flap is shut.
3M VHB adhesive pad
This is not double-sided tape. VHB is the industrial foam adhesive used to bond panels onto vehicles and buildings, and on a clean, smooth, dry surface it forms a bond you will need a blade to break.
It asks for three things and it is unforgiving if it does not get them: a surface wiped with isopropyl alcohol, thirty seconds of firm pressure, and a few hours before the vehicle moves. It also does not like being stuck on in the cold, so fit it indoors or wait for a warm day. Rough, dirty, oily, textured or flexible surfaces are where it lets go.
The other thing to know: it is close enough to permanent. That is the point of it, but if you expect to move the tracker around, pick a magnet instead.
Zip ties
The least glamorous and, on the right job, the most reliable of the three. A tie wrap does not care what the surface is made of — round, textured, dirty, oily or vibrating, it holds. Bicycle frames and seat posts, motorcycle subframes, scaffold poles, steel studs and gate frames, ladders, strimmers, drills, cases, luggage handles, trailer rails.
It is also the only one of the three that cannot be knocked, pulled or lifted off. A magnet can be caught by a branch or a jet wash; a tie wrap needs snips.
Why ours are plastic and not machined aluminium
Search for an AirTag holder and you will find a lot of milled aluminium and stainless steel. They photograph beautifully and they are the wrong material for the job.
An AirTag finds its way home by talking to passing iPhones. A metal shell sits between the tracker's aerial and those phones, so the signal is weaker, the tag has to work harder to be heard, and you pay for that in battery life. Ours are plastic all the way through, so the signal passes straight out and the tag reports from further away on the battery Apple or Motorola designed for. The only metal in any of them is the magnet itself, and it sits behind the tracker rather than wrapped around it.
The four holders
ORIGINAL — the workhorse
Our first holder and still the one we sell most of. A neodymium magnet sunk into a heavy-duty shell, built to stay put through engine vibration, potholes, washdowns and a British winter. The shape is deliberately unremarkable — tucked beside an engine block or up inside a wheel arch it reads as part of the vehicle, which is rather the point of a hidden tracker. Buy this one for vans, trailers, plant, excavators, tractors and anything that takes a beating.

ORIGINAL Magnetic Holder
Heavy-duty plastic shell with a high-grade neodymium magnet. The toughest of the four, and the fastest to move between vehicles. Fits AirTag 1 & 2 and the Moto Tag.
View the ORIGINALSLIM — the discreet one
The same magnet as the ORIGINAL, at the same strength, in a body that is noticeably smaller and flatter. This is the one to buy if you want the tracker to disappear rather than merely be out of sight. It carries a 3M VHB pad as well, so it will also go on surfaces a magnet cannot touch.
People ask whether slim means weak. It does not — the magnet is identical. What the thinner body costs you is a little of the ORIGINAL's brute physical toughness, so for a mine site or a road planer we would still point you at the bigger one.

SLIM Magnetic & Adhesive Holder
Same magnet as the ORIGINAL in a much lower-profile body, plus a 3M VHB pad for aluminium, plastic and glass. Low enough that most people never spot it.
View the SLIMBASIC — pad and ties, no magnet
Our simplest holder and our cheapest: a 3M VHB pad for flat surfaces and zip-tie slots for round and awkward ones. On a great many jobs you will not miss the magnet at all. A tie wrap through a bike frame, a steel stud or a scaffold pole holds through anything, and unlike a magnet it cannot be knocked off.
Buy this one when the tracker is going on one asset and staying there. You get the same weather resistance and the same signal-friendly plastic for less money.

BASIC Adhesive & Zip-Tie Holder
3M VHB pad plus zip-tie slots, no magnet — the cheapest of the four. For bikes, tools, ladders, scaffold and anything the tracker is staying on permanently.
View the BASICSUPREME — all three fixings
Everything the other three do, in one holder: the full-strength magnet of the ORIGINAL, the slim profile and VHB pad of the SLIM, and the zip-tie slots of the BASIC. If you have not decided what you are fixing it to, or you want one holder that will move between a van, a bike and a toolbox, this is the one to buy. You are paying for the choice, and for most people that is worth having.

SUPREME Magnetic, Adhesive & Zip-Tie Holder
Magnet, 3M VHB pad and zip ties in one slim body. The one to buy when you want the choice, or when the holder will move between different things.
View the SUPREMEWhat are you actually tracking?
- Car — SLIM. Under a seat, behind a trim panel or in the boot well, low profile matters more than brute strength, and the pad covers the plastic surfaces the magnet can't.
- Van, pickup or fleet vehicle — ORIGINAL. Steel chassis, hard life, and if the van is sold or swapped the holder moves in seconds.
- Motorbike — SUPREME. The subframe is steel but it vibrates hard, so we would use the magnet and run a zip tie through as well, as a backstop.
- Bicycle — BASIC. Aluminium or carbon frames ignore magnets entirely; a tie wrap under the bottle cage or behind the seat post is the answer, and it is the cheapest of the four.
- Tools, ladders and plant — ORIGINAL for steel toolboxes and machinery, BASIC for anything with a handle or a pole to tie to.
- Caravan or trailer — ORIGINAL, on the A-frame or chassis rail where it is out of sight from the ground.
- Luggage — BASIC, tied to the handle rather than loose in a pocket where it gets buried under clothes.

Protecting plant: the magnet grips the steel bodywork, so the holder goes up under a panel where nobody looks.
Frequently asked questions
Does a holder weaken the AirTag's signal?
A metal one does. Ours are plastic, so the signal passes straight through and the tag is picked up from as far away as it would be sitting bare on a table. This is the main reason we do not make them in aluminium, however much better it would look in the photos.
Will the magnet really hold on a moving vehicle?
Yes, on clean ferrous metal. Ours have gone out on vans, motorbikes, excavators, tractors, boats, trailers and farm equipment. Two sensible precautions: put it somewhere it cannot be swiped by a branch or a jet wash, and if the surface is thick with underseal or mud, wipe it first — the gap costs you grip.
Is the SLIM's magnet weaker than the ORIGINAL's?
No. It is the same high-grade neodymium magnet at the same strength. The difference is the size and toughness of the body around it, not the grip.
Can I remove the VHB pad afterwards?
Not easily, and that is deliberate. On a properly prepared surface you will need a blade or fishing line to cut the bond, and adhesive residue remover for what's left. If you think you will want to move the tracker, use a magnet holder instead.
Does it fit the AirTag 2 and the Motorola Moto Tag?
All four fit the Apple AirTag 1st and 2nd generation and the Motorola Moto Tag. The tracker is not included.
Are they waterproof?
Water resistant, vibration resistant and impact resistant — left on a bike or a chassis rail through a winter they are fine. They are not sealed diving cases, and the AirTag itself is only rated IP67, so we would not put one permanently underwater.
Will a holder stop a thief finding the tracker?
No, and we would rather say so. A holder is a mounting, not a hiding place. What it does do is let you put the tag somewhere sensible instead of loose in a glovebox, and the magnetic bodies are shaped to look unremarkable when they are tucked out of sight. Someone actively scanning for trackers will still find it.
Which one do most people buy?
The ORIGINAL, by a distance — it was our first holder and it is still our best seller. The SUPREME is the one to pick if you would rather not have to decide.
An honest note on all four
These are 3D printed, so you will see fine print lines on the surface. That is normal for the process rather than a defect, and it makes no difference to strength, weather resistance or fit — but we would rather tell you now than have it be a surprise.
And one recommendation against spending money: if the tracker is going on one bicycle and staying there for the next five years, do not pay extra for a magnet you will never use. The BASIC will hold it just as well.
